Open

“I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to  which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ….” - Ephesians 1:16-20

On our own, we would never know. Never.  If left to our own prowess and sensibilities, we wouldn’t.  The apostle Paul summed it up best when he wrote” (quoting a slew of O/T Scriptures), “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”  (visit Romans 3:10-12)

Kind of depressing, isn’t it?

If left on our own, we would never know God.  And frankly, left on our own, we wouldn’t care. We are generally very happy plotting our own paths, even if they lead to areas that where we  know we shouldn’t go.

And that is why Paul could pray, “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you…”

This was the prayer of Paul for a struggling group of trusters and believers. And perhaps even for a few skeptics in Ephesus.  It needs to be our prayer also.  For those of us that trust and follow Jesus, that we would come to know even deeper the riches of this glorious inheritance that we share with believers and trusters around the world and through the ages.  That’s kind of an amazing thought.

But also, this is a prayer for those around us that don’t know Jesus as Lord and Savior. Friends, they never will on their own.  What do you suppose would happen if we really dedicated ourselves to praying for people who don’t know Jesus? That they would have the eyes of their hearts opened.  By Christ. For eternity.

Can’t think of a better thing to be praying for this morning. Can you?
