“For the Lord is
our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver; the Lord is our king; he will save us.”
Isaiah 33:22
What an interesting snippet of
Scripture. And it really hits home for
me. There are four quick statements here
about the Lord. He is judge, lawgiver,
king, and savior. Why do I find it so
interesting?
Think about it. Isaiah here is describing a government. What does the government do? Give laws,
enforce the laws (judge the lawbreaker), rule over us (be our king). The frightening aspect of this passage is the
fact that most of us are far too willing to allow the government –any
government – to be our savior.
As we here in the United States
move away from being a somewhat religious society full steam into a purely
secular society, we still expect to have a savior. Government. Politics aside, it is sad. We want our government to give laws, enforce
them, rule over us, and save us. And no
matter what kind of government we have, nor what their political propensities
may be, nor how secular we may become, we will still bow down and worship a
savior.
I don’t really care what your
political leanings may be, nor do I have much of a desire to preach on my
political leanings; frankly for the most part, secular politics bore me.
But….
The passage from Isaiah points to
the government that needs to be inaugurated in our hearts. It is the Lord’s government. It is he that will ultimately judge each and
every one of us; it is he that has given us the laws by we are to order our
lives by, it is he that has laid claim to our hearts as King, and it is he, and
only he that will save us. No one else
and nothing else will ever be able to lay such claims in the ultimate sense.
So…who do you wish to be governed
by?
Good word, pastor
