Translation

“For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.” Psalm 62:1,2 (ESV)

The discussion about Bible versions on my page previously in the week is swirling through my mind this early morning.  In my daily morning email, I receive a verse from Bible Gateway; and this morning it was Psalm 62:2, from the English Standard Version. “He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.”

It doesn’t seem right. I thought the end of the sentence should read something like “…I will never be shaken.” Right?

A cursory view of the verse at Bible Hub (a great resource) among other pages shows my initial thoughts are at least partially confirmed. A many a good translation does use a phrase like “I shall never be shaken” (NRSV) to end that sentence. Many. But not all by any means.

Being that I am not an expert in Hebrew, and as I write this at 6:00 in the morning, I’m feeling too lazy to break out my software and parse things out, I’ll take the various translation renderings in the Bible Hub page with a small grain of salt. They are not unanimous.

Life’s translation, at least over the past ten days in my life, is proving the ESV’s rendering (along with the KJV, NASB, etc.) to be experientially accurate.  Believers and followers of Christ *will* be shaken. We will be. We are. But never enough to take our eyes off our ‘rock and salvation.’

Although Susie is feeling rather remarkably well, there are many limits on what she can do right now, and limits may remain so into the foreseeable future.  I’ve no doubt she’s felt a shake in the foundation. Add to the mix that a nagging asthma condition that I have struggled with this winter put me in the E.R. Sunday afternoon, and yes, there has been some trembling. And, uh, an IV infusion of steroids will do that. Literally.

Yet. Even in the shaking, I can easily profess, “
For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress….”  I know from whom my ultimate help comes from.  Been that way for me for 39 years now.

I’ll gladly trust in Jesus. I shall not be *greatly* shaken.

And that is my translation.
